What Is Tsavorite?

The stone and its geological context

TSAVORA®June 20254 min read

Tsavorite is a green variety of grossular garnet. Trace elements including vanadium and chromium are associated with its colour. Their role in some critical-mineral policy discussions does not classify an individual gemstone as a critical mineral.

Mineral note

Tsavorite is a green variety of grossular garnet. Trace elements including vanadium and chromium are associated with its colour. The exact appearance of a stone within the suite depends on several raw material and cutting factors.

Colour and durability

Colour, clarity, cut and wearability should be assessed for the particular stone and design. Mohs hardness is one useful measure, but it is not a complete guide to durability.

Tsavorite colour notes

Pale mint
A light green appearance.

Sage green
A softer yellow-green appearance.

Vivid green
A saturated green appearance.

Deep vivid
A darker, concentrated green appearance.

Forest
A deep green appearance.

Colour is observed differently across lighting, cut and setting. These descriptions are visual notes, not grades, preferences or value statements.

Hardness note

Mohs hardness is one useful measure of scratch resistance. It does not, by itself, determine a stone’s suitability for a setting or daily wear. Discuss the suite and design with an appropriate jeweller or specialist.
